Eighteenth Dispatch - [written]
Thursday, September 6th
To all of you newly arrived: welcome. I offer my condolences to those upset by their sudden situation.
I am Captain Horatio Hornblower of His Majesty's Ship Atropos and Luceti Enclosure Ship Britannia.
Britannia is always seeking new crew members. With the exception of commissioned officers, there is no exclusivity expected of crew.
On September 15th, Britannia will set sail. We depart at two bells in the forenoon watch. [He writes in the margin: 9 AM.] We will return on the 19th. This voyage will be to instruct crew members in sailing a three-masted ship-rigged vessel.
All those interested are to contact myself or Lieutenant Kennedy by four bells in the first watch [another margin note: 10 PM] on the 14th of September.

[Archie is reading all this from the couch in the parlour, his cup of tea forgotten.]

[Of course, they're one ship with one cannon. And there was nothing organized for the land...
But.
But it was something.]
We can at least try to be prepared.

I wonder how keen the Malnosso would be about arming us, if we helped with the tasks they ask sometimes. [He isn't fond of the idea of working with or for the Malnosso, but it's worse to be unarmed and possibly facing an invasion than to bend his principles regarding them.]

[...Still a funny name. But even so-] I can't fairly offer my services for the ship because I've got the obligations my position with the SOS-Brigade affords, but I'd be willing to assist you in advertising for crew members via flyers or people on the street if you'd like the extra publicity.
Respectfully,
-Haruhi Suzumiya

[...You know this letter format is sort of fun]

Your offer is most kind. I should be quite grateful for assistance in recruitment. I would also like to make note that simple crew -- those to help with the sails, the guns, and the upkeep of the ship -- would not be expected to be always available. Even the warrant officers would not be required to show exclusivity.
That would only be asked of what would be, in my world, commissioned officers -- the midshipmen and lieutenants.
Sincerely,
Hornblower

Don't you heave the required Lieutenants, at least? I recall you having at least one during my brief time on your ship. Actually, on that note - is it reasonable to assume that there would be training provided for anyone who would be recruited and you could promote them as you deem sound?
Sincerely,
Suzumiya
[written]
I have one lieutenant, which is all that my ship requires.
We do, however, need midshipmen, which are lieutenants in training, if you will. They are taught to command, navigate, and generally keep a ship in order.
There are many other positions as well, including heads of each area to oversee the others.
Mister Kennedy and I are more than happy to provide any and all training required, and promotions are available to those with the skill, dedication, and drive to earn them.
Respectfully,
Cpt Hornblower

[It's her attempt at a joke.]
I'll be there.

Perhaps it will get better with more exposure. [But he understands if it doesn't. Really. He really does.]

[Personally, Amelia doesn't think her luck is that good.]

[A pause.]
I still suffer for the first twelve or twenty-four hours I'm out to sea. If it's calm. In a storm, it often returns. But when there's work to be done, it, like everything else, must be set aside.

Pressed men responded to duties, to purpose. Not to idleness and not to a complete lack of discipline.] But we are all brought here without any regard to our duties where we are from or the lives we led there. For many, there is great loss.
A welcome might... ease the transition, but condolences are well deserved too, I think.

I shall get you a list of basic stores we will need. Food only, as this is a lesson in sailing.
I intend to begin weekly instruction on the guns per the Battle Dome simulation on September 15th.
